When I was 19 years old, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease.
Crohn’s is an autoimmune disease which means I’m one of the millions of Americans who are immunocompromised. My immune system defenses are lowered and may not be able to fight off infections or disease.
My diagnosis changed my life, but it also gave me information which allowed me to prepare for life differently. In situations where I'll be exposed to lots of people, which means lots of germs, I take extra steps to ensure that I protect myself from sickness. That includes my trips to the salon. Visiting a nail salon can be a relaxing and enjoyable experience, but for those with immune deficiencies, it requires extra precautions to ensure safety and health.
Here are a few tips for the immunocompromised on how to protect yourself at your next salon visit.
1. Choose Your Salon Wisely: Start by selecting a salon known for its cleanliness and hygiene. Look for places that have good reviews, especially regarding their sanitation practices. Don’t hesitate to ask about their sterilization processes for tools and equipment.
2. B.Y.O.T. (Bring Your Own Tools): When practical, bringing your own nail tools, such as clippers, files, and buffers, to reduce the risk of infection. Make sure you clean and disinfect them before and after use. Sainte Nèl offers a hypoallergenic six piece manicure tool set made from real gold. It's also made with titanium so its noncorrosive, which means you can clean it and it will not corrode the metal.
3. Avoid Cuticle Cutting: Ask the nail technician to avoid cutting your cuticles. Cuticles protect your nails from bacteria and infections, and cutting them can increase the risk of complications. Instead, opt for pushing them back gently.
4. Timing is Key: Consider visiting the salon during less crowded times to minimize exposure to germs. I try to visit on weekdays right when they open (hello Tuesday at 10am).
5. Monitor Your Skin Condition: Pay attention to any cuts, scrapes, or infections on your hands or feet before visiting the salon. If you notice any, reschedule your appointment to avoid exposing yourself to external irritants.
6. Communicate Your Needs: If you are comfortable, inform your nail technician about your immune deficiency and any specific concerns you have. A good technician will accommodate your needs and take extra precautions to ensure your safety.
7. Aftercare is Crucial: Before and after your appointment, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. This simple step can help prevent the spread of germs.
By following these tips, you can enjoy your nail salon visit with peace of mind, knowing you've taken steps to protect your health. Remember, your safety comes first, so never hesitate to speak up and ensure your needs are met.
